Digital advertising has always been built around signals. Google Search captures what people actively look for. Meta interprets behaviour, interests and engagement. Affiliate marketing captures intent through publishers, creators and commerce partners.
ChatGPT Ads introduces another signal into that mix: the context of a conversation.
OpenAI has begun rolling out advertising in ChatGPT in India, with ads appearing for eligible users on the Free and Go plans. Self-serve advertiser access is also expected to make the platform available to a much broader range of Indian businesses.
For brands, however, the interesting part is not simply that another advertising platform has arrived. It is that consumers are increasingly using AI while researching products, comparing options and making decisions. That creates a new environment for performance marketing, one where intent may be expressed in much richer detail than a keyword or audience segment can capture.
From Search Intent to Conversational Intent
Google Search became one of the most valuable advertising platforms because a search query can reveal what somebody wants at a particular moment.
A query such as “best running shoes under ₹10,000” already provides a strong commercial signal. But a conversation can go much further. The same person might explain how often they run, whether they have flat feet, what terrain they use, the brands they have already considered and the compromises they are willing to make.
That additional context is what makes conversational advertising interesting.
OpenAI itself positions ChatGPT Ads around moments when users are exploring options, comparing alternatives and making decisions. Its advertiser proposition specifically highlights the ability to move beyond keywords by using richer contextual signals.
For performance marketers, this could create an advertising environment that sits somewhere between traditional search and product discovery.
| Channel | Primary Signal | Typical Role |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search | Search query | Capture existing demand |
| Meta | Behaviour and audience signals | Create and scale demand |
| Affiliate & Creators | Trust and partner influence | Influence and convert |
| ChatGPT Ads | Conversational context | Research, comparison and decision support |
This does not mean ChatGPT replaces any of these channels. It means marketers may gain another way to understand where a consumer is within the buying journey.
The Consideration Stage Could Become More Valuable
A large part of digital advertising has historically focused either on generating awareness or capturing someone close to conversion.
Conversational AI sits naturally in the space between those two points.
People increasingly use AI assistants to understand unfamiliar categories, compare competing products, simplify complicated decisions and narrow down choices. Those behaviours are particularly valuable for businesses selling products that require explanation or evaluation before purchase.
An advertiser selling skincare, travel, consumer electronics or financial products, for example, may benefit from being present while a user is actively comparing possibilities rather than simply waiting for the final search query.
This could make ChatGPT particularly interesting for performance teams trying to influence the consideration stage, where attribution has traditionally been much harder to understand.
Paid Visibility Is Different From AI Visibility
Brands should also separate two concepts that will increasingly appear together: advertising inside AI products and appearing organically inside AI answers.
OpenAI says ads remain separate from ChatGPT's responses and do not influence the answers generated by the model. Advertisers cannot pay to alter or rank within an organic ChatGPT response.
That distinction matters for both SEO and GEO strategy.
A brand could potentially buy an advertisement related to a user's conversation while still being absent from the organic response. At the same time, another brand might be mentioned organically because its products, information or authority are considered relevant, even though it is not advertising.
That means brands will increasingly need to think about two parallel visibility strategies.
Paid AI visibility is about media buying, targeting, creative and conversion measurement. Organic AI visibility is about whether search engines and AI systems can clearly understand the brand, its expertise, its products and its relevance to particular questions.
For marketers, GEO does not replace paid media and paid media does not replace GEO. They influence different parts of the same discovery journey.
Creative Will Need More Context
ChatGPT Ads should not become another destination for recycled Meta ads.
The user mindset is different.
Someone scrolling through a social feed may respond to interruption, entertainment or visual impact. Someone asking ChatGPT for help is usually trying to solve a problem, research something or make a decision.
Advertising in that environment therefore needs to feel useful within the context of the conversation.
Instead of asking only which headline will produce the highest click-through rate, marketers may need to think about what information would genuinely help a customer move forward.
That could mean clearer product comparisons, stronger value propositions, useful offers or creative that addresses a very specific consideration rather than broad awareness messaging.
The better the advertising understands the customer's decision, the more naturally it can fit into the experience.
Treat It as a Test, Not a New Budget Line
The temptation with every new advertising platform is to allocate budget simply because attention is moving there.
That is not how performance marketing should work.
ChatGPT Ads should initially be treated as a structured experiment. OpenAI's Ads Manager already supports campaign objectives built around CPM, CPC and conversion-optimised CPC models, giving advertisers familiar ways to begin measuring performance.
The important questions will be whether ChatGPT traffic converts differently, whether some categories benefit more than others, whether the channel produces incremental customers and how those users behave after they leave the conversation.
Those answers will matter far more than early CTR benchmarks.
Where ChatGPT Fits in the Growth Engine
The arrival of ChatGPT Ads reinforces something broader about modern performance marketing: channels are multiplying, but customer journeys are becoming more connected.
Search can capture demand. Social can create it. Creators can build trust. Affiliates can extend distribution and capture commercial intent. Conversational AI may increasingly influence how consumers research and evaluate their options before choosing.
For Creative Cuddle, that is the more useful way to think about ChatGPT Ads.
It is not simply another advertising platform to add to the media plan. Its value will depend on whether conversational intent can play a measurable role inside the wider customer journey and produce incremental growth.
Brands that figure that out early will have something much more valuable than first-mover attention. They will understand how to market when the search box starts becoming a conversation.
